Bluesocket assists Beverly High in their green school initiative

Beverly High has scored high marks and an abundance of praise as a “green school” leader. Beverly High selected Bluesocket as the wireless LAN provider due to our vWLAN (virtual wireless LAN) solution.

vWLAN combines the power of virtualization with wireless networking thereby eliminating the need for hardware controllers. Eliminating wireless hardware controllers results in significant energy savings – since 80% of energy costs within a wireless LAN are attributed to hardware controllers. This reduction in required hardware also translates into reduced CO2 output by eliminating the manufacturing, shipping, installation, storage, maintenance, and end of life disposal for that hardware. For more information on how Bluesocket’s vWLAN solution addresses customers’ increasing concerns over the environmental impact of IT purchasing and operating decisions, visit our sustainability page.

This month an article detailing Beverly High’s efforts appeared in the Beverly Citizen newspaper. Below I have included a few highlights as well as the link to the complete article.

June 2011, Beverly Citizen Newspaper:

“While Beverly High School has long been known as the first in the state with solar energy, the new school building brings BHS into a new arena of recognition as a leader in green building design and technology.

As of September 2011, Beverly High School will rank among the top public high schools in Massachusetts for:

  • Renewable energy capacity, with 183 kilowatts of solar photovoltaic arrays and 10 kW of wind placing BHS in the top spot with Hopkinton High School
  • Laptops for each student connected to a Bluesocket wireless network in each classroom and throughout the school, making BHS the first school in eastern Massachusetts to offer students a one-to-one digital learning platform.
  • High-tech energy efficiency systems that enable installed sensors and online computer programs to control and adjust lights, air circulation, water usage and room temperature”…

…”While communities such as Manchester and Newton can also be proud of new high schools with green design features, BHS is the only one of these schools to be equipped for one-to-one laptop learning in a wireless environment.

“Embarking upon our new educational initiative this fall preparing students for a digital world by offering them state-of-the-art technology such as the Apple laptop computers connected to the Bluesocket WiFi network is an exciting step in our journey of 21st century learning,” said Paul Cohen, BHS technology operations manager.

The high-performance wireless network, which uses less electricity and less hardware, is another green design feature of the building.”…
